Architecture has always been an expression of life, the medium by which people have recorded their emotions, aspirations and their beliefs. Like the centuries old monuments of the pyramids to the great cathedrals of Europe from the medieval era, Notre Dame Church stands as a monument to the faith and accomplishments of the Catholic people of Southbridge. Originally it was the house of worship for French-Canadians who migrated to Southbridge in the 1840s for employment in local factories.
Notre Dame Church belongs to Saint John Paul II Parish in Southbridge. Saint John Paul II Parish was created by the Most Reverend Robert McManus, Bishop of Worcester on July 1, 2011 from the pre-existing Catholic parishes of Southbridge.. It is one of two churches that the parish uses for its divine worship. This brochure is to help orient a visitor to this magnificent house of worship and invite you to join us for worship. Contemporary Catholics inherit the proud legacy of these early Catholic pioneers who for their appreciation of their religious faith, love and beauty have left us Notre Dame Church.
Records from 1916, when the church was completed, detail that construction cost $226,030.81 and was debt free when it opened on July 2, 1916. When one considers that the hourly wage for a carpenter at the time was 25 cents, the generosity of these early Catholics is not only impressive, but hopefully will serve as an inspiration for future generations.
